Economic system in which the state assumes responsibility and provision of a large number of services, such as education or healthcare, in a non-discriminatory manner and at no cost to the direct recipient of these services. The service is provided by state officials and its cost is covered by the general budget of the state. In recent years, the welfare state has been in crisis due to its high cost, high tax pressure, individual demotivation, and inefficiency in spending.
